USA Win First Ever Olympic Gold Medal in Korea

Congratulations to skipper John Shuster and the American team for winning Gold at the Winter Olympic games in South Korea. Earlier in the competition the US curlers found themselves near elimination with a record of 2-4 in Round Robin play. They somehow managed to right the ship and make it into the medal rounds with incredible play including two victories over curling powerhouse Canada.  That feat alone would make any team’s Olympics outing a successful one.

The team comprised of Shuster, Matt Hamilton, Tyler George, John Landsteiner and Joe Polo reeled off 5 consecutive wins culminating with a victory over Sweden in the final to take Gold for the United States.  Tyler George said “This is a team that never gives up.” and it showed during the 2nd week.

A tense back and forth match for the Gold Medal was blown open by a rare 5 point barrage by the Americans in the 8th end. From then on Shuster instructed the team to play very defensive to prevent the Swedes from racking up any big scores in the final two ends. Swedish captain Niklas Edin finally conceded the match with just a few throws remaining.

The success of the team brought great exposure to the game of curling throughout the US including 90 minutes of nationally televised weekend coverage on NBC.  CurlingStone.com thanks the team for all its done to boost the sport.
